// Andrés 'El Jíbaro' Jiménez
Andrés ‘El Jíbaro’ Jiménez is an acclaimed Puerto Rican singer/songwriter working in the ‘jibaro’ or Puerto Rican folk music tradition. Born in 1947 in the small mountain town of Orocovis, he was one of 15 children and had a rural childhood. At the age of 17 he went to New York, was drafted into the US army and served in the Vietnam war. Returning to Puerto Rico, he has dedicated himself to keeping ‘jibaro’ music alive, and his songs are synonymous with a love of the island and, increasingly, the movement seeking full independence from the US. In 2001 he released Son de Vieques with Ismael Miranda, an album protesting US military use of the island of Vieques. His album ‘Mi Parranda’ won Billboard’s Tropical Latin album of the year award in 2008.
